On Wednesday, April 24, the 43-foot tall sculpture of the Golden Spike will be on display at Wells City Park, as part of a community event. During the 4:00-6:00 PM event, the Golden Spike Foundation would love to share the story of the Spike monument’s creation and journey. The Golden Spike National Historic Site commemorates the joining of the western and eastern tracks at Promontory Summit and the history of the workers who built the first transcontinental railroad. Constructed between 1863 and 1869, the first transcontinental railroad created a revolutionary transcontinental transportation network and became one of the technological feats of the 19th century with the driving of the last spike at Promontory Summit that opened it to traffic on May 10, 1869.

Get in the Act delivered their innovative Science Theater Program to second, third and fourth-grade students at Wells Elementary School on April 15-16, 2024. Get in the Act adds the Arts to S.T.E.M. learning - transforming S.T.E.M. to S.T.E.A.M. - with their hands-on theater framework serving as a pathway to science for students. Led by Teaching Artist Diane Handzel, students used dynamic theater techniques as a learning structure to examine rocks, soil and minerals concepts. Using all their senses in the learning process, students dramatized science concepts in scenes with their peers, quickly connecting these concepts to their everyday world. Because students have a memorable experience acting-out these scenes, they can learn the art and science content associated with these scenes. Get in the Act would like to thank Komatsu Mining Foundation, Nevada Gold Mines, Kinross Gold, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts for supporting Science Theater at Wells Elementary. Also, a special thank you to Principal Woolsey, Cuca Rodriguez and to the classroom teachers for being wonderful and supportive partners. Get in the Act is a 501(c)3 organization based in Stagecoach, Nevada and their Science Theater Program has served over 30,000 students since 2009. They can be reached at email: info@getintheact.org

On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, our baseball team won their game against Eureka High School by a score of 15-0. Way to go LEOPARDS! Article From MaxPreps Wells Leopards vs. Eureka Vandals Wells came tearing into Wednesday's game with 12 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.4 runs) and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Eureka Vandals onto the board and left with a 15-0 win. Considering Wells has won 11 matches by more than seven runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new. Teagan Calton and Cesar Berumen were a major factor while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Calton tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Berumen tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive pitching appearances. At bat, Calton scored two runs and stole two bases while going 2-for-2, while Berumen went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs, and two RBI. In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Peterson, who went 1-for-1 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs. Anton Messna was another key contributor, going 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs. Wells' victory was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-2. As for Eureka, they haven't won a game yet this season and fell to 0-9. Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Wells will take on Smith Valley at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Smith Valley knows how to get runs on the board -- the team has finished with flashy run totals in its past nine contests -- so hopefully Wells likes a good challenge. As for Eureka, they will be playing at home against Tonopah at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
