Leopards outrun Bulldogs

ELKO — After splitting the regular-season matchups, the Division 1A East quarterfinal between No. 4 Wells (7-7 in league) and No. 5 McDermitt (7-7 in league) provided an instant classic.
On Jan. 17, the Bulldogs rode their home floor to a 52-41 victory, but the Leopards used their home court and bounced back with a 70-53 home win on Feb. 7 in the regular-season finale.
Meeting for the third time — and the second time in a matter of five days — Wells was the victor in a wild-west shootout.
On Thursday, the Leopards and the Bulldogs provided plenty of points, highlight plays and red-hot shooting in a game with little defense.
In the 1A East regional quarterfinal, Wells advanced with an 87-72 victory — pulling away late in the fourth quarter after McDermitt cut the lead to four.
Wells led 23-20 after the first quarter, which ended with a 70-foot heave from the other three-point line at the buzzer by McDermitt junior Dylan Palmer.
The Leopards and the Bulldogs each mounted 20 points in the second period — which concluded with another buzzer-beating three from the right wing by McDermitt sophomore Bryson Hunter — and Wells took a 43-40 lead to the locker room.
In the third, the offenses continued to mount points — the Leopards scoring 18 in the frame and the Bulldogs adding 15 to their total.
Going to the fourth quarter, Wells led by six at 61-55.
After McDermitt senior Shandon Camas cut the deficit to four with a deuce from an inbound pass by Palmer, Wells senior Joe Dahl scored five straight — two on free throws and burying a three.
The Bulldogs trimmed the margin back to four with a jumper by Hunter on an assist from Palmer, who then set up a triple for junior Chris Scott.
But Wells scored four in a row with a free throw by Dahl, and And-1 and a free throw by junior Skyler Harney.
Hunter stroked a three from a dish by Palmer, but Harney splashed two foul shots and junior Olen Morrison went coast-to-coast for a layup and drained two foul shots for a 76-65 lead.
McDermitt momentarily stayed in the hunt with an And-1 on the right block by junior Treal Scott but Wells junior Charles Peterson put in work on the offense glass and connected on two free throws.
Camas followed up his own miss, but McDermitt ran out of gas on the defensive end of the floor and gave up a 7-0 run.
Wells went up 16 with an offensive putback by Morrison, a layup by sophomore Tripp Spainhower and the third triple for Morrison on a Dahl dime.
Camas cashed a late three, but the game closed with an offensive follow by Wells freshman Gavin Martinez.
In the end, the Leopards advanced to the semifinal round with an 87-72 victory.
Morrison was lights out for Wells and dropped a game-high 29 points — scoring 10 in both the first and fourth quarters — and hammered three 3s.
Camas led McDermitt with 23 points, scoring 19 in the second half.
Dahl also reached 20 points for the Leopards and buried four 3s, while Palmer hit 20 points and cashed four treys for the Bulldogs — including his first-quarter heave at the buzzer from the other end of the floor.
Harney served as the third Wells player in double digits with 15 points, and Spainhower gave the Leopards four players in double figures with 13 points and drained two 3s.
Hunter gave McDermitt three players in double digits with 12 points and two 3s, his first coming at the halftime buzzer.
Treal Scott neared double figures with nine points, Chris Scott finished with five and senior AJ Farmer closed out the offense for the Bulldogs with three points.
Wells’ scoring was rounded out with five points for junior Luis Martinez, three free throws by Peterson and two points from Gavin Martinez.
Division 1A East Semifinal
In the Division 1A East semifinal round, the No. 4 Leopards (7-7 overall) were scheduled to face No. 1 Eureka (14-0 in league) at 4:40 p.m. Friday, at Centennial Gymnasium.
The Vandals dominated both matchups in league play with a 68-42 road win on Jan. 2, in Wells, and a 66-23 home victory on Jan. 30, in Eureka.

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wells). They breezed past the McDermitt Bulldogs to the tune of 69-41 on Saturday. The Leopards have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 games by 22 points or more this season.
Khloe Del Rio had another great game (as she tends to do), putting up 13 points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists. Those five assists gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Reese Livingstone, who posted 13 points and seven boards.
They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Wells was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Loss or not, McDermitt got some senior leadership from Cierra Smart and Alexis Scott. Smart put up 18 points and six blocks, while Scott almost dropped a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Scott has been hot, having posted nine or more boards the last eight times she's played.
The win (which was Wells' third in a row) raised their record to 17-6. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.7 points over those games. As for McDermitt, their defeat dropped their record down to 10-9.
She was celebrated for the hard work and heart she has brought to the team each season.

Success is Cooking in the PAES Lab!
From Mrs. Shamblin
Our PAES Lab "employees" recently took their skills to the next level by launching a full-scale Concessions Business. This project moved beyond the classroom to teach our students the reality of working with the public, managing finances, and professional communication.
Our team prepared a delicious menu entirely from scratch, including freshly rolled breakfast burritos, baked goods, and a special Valentine’s Day Chex Mix. The work started long before the food was served; our students practiced professional outreach, making phone calls and meeting with managers to coordinate logistics. Every student participated, proving that teamwork is the secret ingredient to a successful business!
Innovation & Growth
The momentum hasn’t stopped there. Thanks to a recent grant, we’ve expanded into specialized trade skills with new leather tooling supplies. We are especially proud of student Olen M., who is showing incredible initiative. Olen already operates a business cleaning skulls, and he is now learning to integrate intricate leather tooling into his craft. Watching these students grow into successful, respectful, and skilled employees is truly the most satisfying part of the PAES Lab.

Varsity Leopards Boys Basketball Update
The Wells Varsity Leopards earned a dominant 56–13 win over Jackpot on Tuesday, February 3. The Leopards faced a tough road stretch, falling to Eureka High School 23–66 on Friday, January 30, and dropping a close contest to Lund High School 47–55 on Saturday, January 31.
The Leopards are currently ranked 6th in the 1A East League 🏀🐆

The Varsity Girls were back in action with a busy stretch of games to close out January and open February.
Friday, Jan. 30: Wells fell to Eureka High School, 28–37, in a tough road matchup.
Saturday, Jan. 31: The Lady Leopards bounced back with a strong win over Lund High School, 51–39.
Tuesday, Feb. 3: Wells dominated at home against Jackpot High School, with a 50–15 victory.

The girls defeated White Pine 13–8 to punch their ticket to the State Tournament in Round Mountain!
They’ll face RCMS (Pahrump) this Saturday at 11:00 AM.
The team also battled hard in the Regional Championship, falling to an undefeated Lund squad 34–27.

The boys pulled off a thrilling 31–27 win over White Pine to advance to State!
They’ll also take on RCMS (Pahrump) this Saturday at 12:00 PM in Round Mountain.
In the Regional Championship, they fought tough against a powerhouse Battle Mountain team, falling 33–25.
