Carlin wears down Wells
CARLIN — On Thursday, the Wells and Carlin football team played a spirited first half.
The Leopards — who lost to the Railroaders 26-13 on Aug. 28, in Wells — challenged Carlin during its homecoming contest.
At the break, the game was tied 22-22.
But the Roaders wore down Wells in the second half and closed the ballgame on a 22-0 streak for a 44-22 win for another double-up margin of victory.
Wells scored on its first play from scrimmage on a 70-yard gallop off the right edge by senior quarterback Joe Dahl.
Dahl completed a pass to sophomore tight end Justice Nelson and gave the Leopards an 8-0 lead.
Carlin came right back and earned a 44-yard touchdown run on a late pitch to senior tailback Dylan Ramirez, who reversed field against an over-pursuing defense.
The conversion failed as Wells senior Gage Uhlig made a nice tackle on the run attempt, making the score 8-6 in favor of Wells.
On the ensuing drive, the Leopards marched 69 yards in 11 plays — sophomore Kade Kelly punching home from a yard out.
For the conversion, Dahl found junior Johnny Glascock on a swing pass and pushed Wells to a 16-6 advantage.
The teams traded punts on their next two possessions, but the Roaders scored their second touchdown on their third drive — going 54 yards on nine plays — junior tight end Landon Huntley hauling in a 15-yard touchdown on a reverse pass from Ramirez.
Senior Tryston Martinez added the conversion and brought Carlin to within two at 16-14 in the second quarter.
Wells responded with another lengthy touchdown drive, starting at its own 34 and going 66 yards in 13 plays.
Dahl pushed across the goal line on a one-yard sneak, but the two-point pass fell incomplete with a nice breakup by Carlin senior Gage Lewis — the Leopards leading 22-14.
The ebb-and-flow continued as Carlin came up with a crucial answer on a 70-yard drive in eight plays.
Senior wide receiver Jacob Stucki reeled in a wide-open 37-yard strike from Lewis, grabbed the conversion on the same connection and tied the tally 22-22 with 55 seconds remaining in the half.
The Roaders received the opening kickoff in the third quarter and took their first lead after a 67-yard, four-play gut punch.
Ramirez scored on a 59-yard rush from a delay give.
The conversion pass was incomplete, but Carlin led 28-22.
The game swung quickly into Carlin’s favor with a pooch onside kick, which was recovered at the Wells 40 by sophomore Max Burgener.
From the 40, the Roaders rolled to pay dirt in six plays — Ramirez
hammering home from a yard out.
Lewis scrambled up the middle and dove across the goal line as he was hit for the conversion and pushed Carlin to a 36-22 advantage.
Wells punted on its next possession but received a great boot from Nelson — who ripped a 56-yard kick — pinning Carlin deep in the shadows of its own end zone at the 6.
However, the Roaders controlled the outcome with a gritty 94-yard, 15-play drive.
On 3rd-and-29 from the 20, Lewis launched a 50-50 ball into a swarm of players — where Huntley high-pointed the football and completed the catch at the Wells 47 for a back-breaking play.
Huntley capped the sealing drive with a five-yard touchdown on a rollout from Lewis, who then connected with Martinez for the conversion.
Carlin closed the contest on a 22-0 flurry for a 44-22 victory and swept both meetings over Wells.
Stats
Lewis completed 5-of-11 passes for 82 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions and ran for 90 yards on 13 carries.
Ramirez gashed the Leopards for 274 rushing yards on 23 totes with three touchdown runs and threw a 15-yard touchdown pass on his lone attempt.
Martinez carried 11 times for 83 yards and caught one ball for three yards.
Huntley hauled in three receptions for 54 yards with two TDs.
Stucki snagged two balls for 40 yards and a 37-yard touchdown.
Wells did not record stats for the contest.
Up Next
The Leopards (3-4 overall, 3-2 in league) will travel and face the Lakers (2-4 overall, 2-3 in league) at 7 p.m. Thursday, in Pyramid Lake.
