ELKO — As seniors are graduating from Elko County schools this week, the district’s Board of Trustees honored the top students from each school on Tuesday.
“It was awesome to recognize those wonderful top students and achievers,” Elko County School District Superintendent Clayton Anderson told the board on Tuesday.
He said in an email on Wednesday the top students were determined based on the highest cumulative grade-point average in their graduating class.
Graduating seniors with the highest GPA also include Kira Boner, who graduates from Wells High School.
ECSD’s board president, Matt McCarty, said on Wednesday that “I love being able to celebrate achievement,” and “what’s great about having a district as widespread as we are, is that in each of those schools achievement looks different.
“Some of our top graduates may have had well over a 4.0 GPA and others of our top graduates may not have had anything close to a 4.0, but yet each of them in their respective areas all excelled,” McCarty said.
The individual GPAs for the top students weren’t announced at the board meeting, and one reason for the large variation is that some students take college classes in high school that brings the GPA above the 4.0, which means all A’s.
CONGRATULATIONS Kira! We are proud of you!

Wells’ Eyer Morrison captured two state championships, winning both the saddle bronc and the bull riding.
Aboard the broncs, Morrison racked up 328.5 points — entering the state finals with a total of 226.
At state, he claimed the average win with a three-horse score of 196 points.
He won the second round with a 69-point ride, topped the short go with a mark of 62 and ranked second in the first round with a 65-point effort.
In the bull riding, Morrison mounted 299 points on the season — 194 prior to state — and led second place by 209 points.
He knocked down his second average win with a three-bull tally of 228 points.
Morrison won all three go-rounds with respective rides of 76, 73 and 79 — saving his best ride for the short-round.
Congratulations EYER and good luck at Nationals!

In Mrs. Hansen's class, the students have been engaged in a study unit focused on the concept of volume. As a part of this immersive learning experience, they exhibited their creativity by crafting incredible animal sculptures that illustrate the concept of volume.

The students at Wells Elementary were fortunate to receive informative safety presentations from Wells Rural Electric Company and the Fire Department. We are grateful for their time and effort in educating our students on the importance of safety with fire and electricity!

The Wells Jr/Sr High School's annual awards ceremony on Friday, May 31st was a grand celebration of academic excellence and student achievements. The event showcased numerous students who were honored with academic awards and received special recognition from their teachers.

Our elementary students recently completed their MAPS testing. The students were challenged to improve their test scores with the incentive of being able to tape Mr. Woolsey & Mrs. Barger to the wall! Each student could earn one or two pieces of tape, depending on how they improved. All students earned at least one piece with many receiving two!!
It took 6.4 pounds of tape to hold them to the wall, but they both held for a few seconds!! It was a huge success and the students were thrilled to see them stuck to the wall!

At Wells Combined School, we are proud to have a highly dedicated staff. We would like to express our gratitude and extend our congratulations on their retirement to Lisa Robinson and Robert Johnson.
Lisa has worked for the ECSD for 9 years. She had previously worked in Washoe County for 4 years and taught in South Dakota and Texas.
Thank you Lisa for your many years of dedication to our students!
Robert Johnson has been employed with ECSD since 1997. He has made a significant impact on many students over the years. Thank you, Robert, for all your years of hard work, dedication to Wells Combined School, and countless hours of effort!
Wishing both of you the best of luck as you retire from ECSD!

On Saturday, June 1st, Wells hosted its first Junior High Co-Ed Golf Tournament at Chimney Rock Municipal Golf Course. Golfers from Wendover, White Pine, and our Wells Leopards participated. We want to give a big shout-out to Cameron Huff and Mike Speir for all their hard work to make the tournament a huge success!

Big congratulations to our girls' track and field team for winning the 2024 NIAA 1A Northern Region Girls Track and Field Championships in May!
Initially awarded 2nd place at the regional meet, they were later informed that they had actually secured 1st place due to some honesty from the school originally placed 1st.
Way to go LADY LEOPARDS!!
