SPRING CREEK — Over the past couple years, girls wrestling has become more popular, prevalent and productive in Elko County.
At the Spring Creek Kiwanis Girls Invite, the trend continued with a number of solid performances from local grapplers.
Elko finished fourth in the team standings with 91.5 points — placing six girls in the top six — Spring Creek was sixth with 70.5 points and placed five girls, Wells ranked eighth with 55 points and placed three girls and West Wendover was 17th with 26 points and one girl in the top six.
Carlin scored four points but did not place any girls in the top six.
Second-Place Finishers
In total, three Elko County girls wrestled to second place finishes in their respective divisions.
Spencer Strong
Elko’s Spencer Strong took second place in the 130-pound division, going 3-1 with three pins.
In the championship match, Strong came up just short in a 5-3 loss to Caldwell’s Abbigail Herrandez.
Saylor Wendell
In the 120-pound class, Elko’s Saylor Wendell ranked second and went 2-1 with a win by fall and another by technical fall.
In the championship, Wendell dropped a 13-6 decision to Buhl’s Ali Svancara.
Tegan Remington
For Wells, Tegan Remington finished second at 115 pounds with a record of 3-1 with three wins by fall.
In the title match, she was pinned at the 3:05 mark by Damonte Ranch’s Lyla Layson.
Third-Place Finishers
A trio of local wrestlers finished third in their respective divisions.
Rose Sharp
For the Lady Indians, Rose Sharp racked up a 4-1 record with four pins and took third in the 155-170 class.
In the consolation final, she pinned White Pine’s Aubree Sumrall at the 2:41 mark.
Victoria Taylor
Spring Creek’s Victoria Taylor paced team with a third-place finish in the 135-pound division, going 3-1 with two pins and a win by tech fall.
For the consolation title, Taylor shut out West Wendover’s Veronica Torres by tech fall with the score at 15-0.
Sophia Taylor
Elko’s Sophia Taylor took third in the 195-235 division with a record of 3-1 with two pins and a win by major decision.
In the consolation championship, she pinned Buhl’s Maya Martinez in 3:08.
Fourth-Place Finishers
Altogether, four Elko County athletes placed fourth in their respective weight classes.
Veronica Torres
For the Lady Wolverines, Torres took fourth and went 3-2 at 135 pounds with all three wins coming by fall.
In the third-fourth match, she dropped a 15-0 loss by tech fall to Victoria Taylor.
Dusty Uhlig
For Wells, Dusty Uhlig also ranked fourth with a 3-2 record and three pins in the 125-pound class.
She lost the consolation championship by fall to Lowry’s Lexie Salvino at the 3:32 mark.
Crystah Mangel
Spring Creek’s Crystah Mangel finished fourth and went 3-2 with two wins by fall in the 130-pound division.
For third and fourth, she was pinned in 1:30 by Caldwell’s Lily Ingle.
Trinity Taylor
Elko’s Trinity Taylor took fourth at 120 pounds and finished 3-2 with one pin.
In the consolation championship, she lost by fall in 1:41 to Caldwell’s Anyah Dransfield.
Fifth-Place Finishers
In total, four Elko County girls finished fifth in the respective divisions.
Alivia Amerigian
For the Lady Spartans, Alivia Amerigian ranked fifth with a 3-2 record at 125 pounds with two pins and a win by major decision.
In the fifth-sixth match, she beat Kimberly’s Macie Youree by fall at the 4:38 mark.
RileyJo Glascock
Wells’ RileyJo Glascock placed fifth in the 110-pound class and went 3-2 with two wins by fall and another by injury default.
For fifth and sixth, Glascock pinned Caldwell’s Peyton Gonzalez in 3:36.
Jaslene Espitia
For Elko, Jaslene Espitia placed fifth and went 2-2 with two pins at 130 pounds.
She pinned Moapa Valley’s Tenley Jensen at the 1:35 mark of the fifth-sixth match.
Dyanna Hernandez
Spring Creek’s Dyanna Hernandez took fifth at 145 pounds and finished 2-2 with two wins by fall.
For fifth and sixth, she beat Caldwell’s Kaylanni Brooks by fall in 3:50.
Sixth-Place Finisher
Alina Collins
For the Lady Spartans, Alina Collins earned sixth place at 115 pounds and closed with a 2-3 record with one pin.
In the fifth-sixth match, Collins lost by fall in 1:38 to Douglas’ Isabelle Tamondong.
