WELLS — To find the last time the Wells football team beat Eureka, one would have to go back more than nine calendar years.
On Sept. 16, 2016, the Leopards edged the Vandals 38-34, in Eureka.
On Thursday, Wells dominated the action against a depleted Eureka squad and rolled to a 36-0 shutout victory and improved to 3-1 in league play of the Division 1A North.
The Leopards took a step in the positive from the whistle, as junior Johnny Glascock returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
The conversion was stopped, but Wells led 6-0 with 11:47 on the clock.
Neither team managed any offense on their next two possessions, but the Vandals threatened to tie the game — or take the lead — reaching the Wells 13 on their drive.
However, senior Devante Miller applied big pressure — as he did all night — and hit the quarterback while he attempted a throw.
Senior Joe Dahl picked off the pass and rolled 87 yards for a pick-six.
The conversion was once again unsuccessful, but the Leopards increased their advantage to 12-0 with 1:37 remaining in the first quarter.
Wells forced a turnover on downs on Eureka’s next possession with a sack and a forced fumble by junior Marcus Uhart on 4th-and-12.
From the 47, Dahl gained eight yards off the left edge and threw a middle screen to senior Gage Uhlig — who broke free for a big gain to the Vandals’ 8.
On 4th-and-goal from the 1, Uhlig found running room off the left tackle for a TD.
The conversion was stopped again, but Wells jumped to an 18-0 lead with 9:50 remaining in the second quarter.
Miller forced a turnover and recovered a bad snap at the Eureka 34, but the Leopards gave the ball back with an interception that was returned to the 45.
The Leopards led 18-0 at the break.
Eureka reached the Wells 19 but turned the ball over on downs as Miller booked a big sack with a nice hit at the 30 on 4th-and-16.
On the first play from scrimmage, Glascock got around the right edge and pulled away for a 70-yard touchdown run.
The extra point was wide to the right, but the Leopards extended to a 24-0 advantage with 3:26 on the third-quarter clock.
Wells forced another turnover on downs on 4th-and-6 on the first play of the third quarter, as the QB was swarmed under by a trio of Leopards — sophomore Kade Kelly, Glascock and Miller combining for the sack.
From the 50, the Leopards picked up a first down on 4th-and-4 at the Eureka 44 with a hard count by Uhlig.
On 3rd-and-15, Glascock took the snap and ran a play-action bootleg, found running room off the left side and cruised to a 44-yard touchdown.
The kick was no good, but the Leopards leaped to a 30-0 lead with 8:24 remaining.
Eureka’s next possession ended with a punt that was blocked, and senior Caden Crane — who plugged up the middle the entire contest — pounced on the loose ball at the Wells 24.
The Leopards punted, but a 4th-and-15 heave for Eureka fell incomplete for a turnover on downs.
On the first play of Wells’ drive, Glascock started up the middle and bounced around the contain for a 39-yard touchdown run down the right sideline with 14 seconds on the clock.
The kick was blocked, but the Leopards ended a nine-year drought against Eureka with a 36-0 shutout shellacking.
