OVERTON — When the dust settled after a windy conclusion of the Division 1A Nevada State Track and Field Championships, just one program stood above the Wells girls.

On May 16 and May 17, the Lady Leopards ranked second in the girls team standings with 80 points — claiming the reserve state championship trophy — and trailed only the 106 points by state champ Eureka.

In seventh, the Lady Railroaders of Carlin tallied 39 points.

Jackpot’s girls mounted 20 points and placed 14th.

On the boys side, Wells took third with 69 points.

Jackpot’s boys scored 24 points for 11th place, and Carlin rounded out the 18-team field with two points.

Girls Results

For the Lady Leopards, sophomore Marli Dahl won the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-record time of 17.81 seconds.

Carlin junior Jaden Loftin took fifth in the event with a time of 18.90 seconds for a personal record.


In the 3200 meters, Wells freshman Millie Cromley also posted a PR of 13:30.36 and took second place.

Wells senior Lillian Harney performed well in each of her throwing events; ranking second in the shot put with a distance of 29-feet-10-1/2-inches and finishing third in the discus with a mark at 78-feet-4-inches.

Jackpot junior Scarlett Garcia followed Harney in fourth in the discus with a 78-foot toss.

In the triple jump, Loftin leaped to a PR of 30-feet-2-1/2 inches for third place.

Well senior Callie Brodsho placed seventh in the triple jump with a distance of 27-feet-4-1/2-inches.

Cromley earned another medal with a fourth-place run of 6:15.59 in the 1600 meters.

Dahl neared a second individual medal with a fifth-place time of 57.19 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles.

Carlin junior Emily McNamara was fifth in the high jump and cleared the bar at 4-feet-2-inches.

In the long jump, Wells senior Destin Martin was seventh with a span of 13-feet-9-inches.

Relays

The Lady Leopards made hay in the relays, winning three of the four events.

Wells — junior April Bochman, junior Laurel Stevenson, junior Maisy Stevenson and Cromley — cruised to the title in the 4x800 meters with a time of 12:16.82.

Carlin — McNamara, freshman Sophia Cantrell, sophomore Mercedez Malone and Loftin — followed in second with a time of 12:32.47.

The Lady Jaguars — senior Aisha Rayas-Giron, junior Jocelyn Cervantes, sophomore Banelly Vazquez-Rosas and sophomore Karina Lucero — crossed the line in 13:53.85 for third place.

In the 4x100, the Lady Leopards — Martin, Brodsho, senior Gizelle Flores and Dahl — darted to a healthy victory with a time of 58.12 seconds.

The Lady Railroaders — freshman Jacey Jensen, freshman Karley Brown, Malone and Cantrell — closed in 1:04.55 for third.

Jackpot — Vazquez-Rosas, Cervantes, Rayas-Giron and Lucero — stopped the clock in 1:05.89 for the fourth and final medal.

The Lady Leopards — Martin, Millie Cromley, Marli Dahl and Brodsho — opened another comfortable margin of victory with a time of 4:56.57 in the 4x400.

Carlin — consisting of McNamara, Cantrell, Malone and Loftin — crossed second in 5:07.03.

In fifth — one spot outside of a medal — the Lady Jags (junior Vanessa Mendez, Cervantes, Raya-Giron and Vazquez-Rosas) stopped the clock in 5:51.07.

In the 4x200, Wells — Martin, freshman Gabriela Garcia, Brodsho and senior Gizelle Flores — posted a time of 2:10.08 for the fourth and final medal.

McNamara, Brown, Malone and Cantrell finished sixth with a time of 2:15.40 for the Lady Roaders.

Boys Results

Jackpot senior Jorge Avila-Fragoza ran second in the 800 meters with a half-mile time of 2:08.38, and Wells sophomore Mason Noorda followed closed in the third in 2:09.7 for a personal record.

In the 400 meters, Noorda lapped the track in 53.90 seconds for second place.

Sophomore teammate Aron Hansen took sixth with a time of 55.45 seconds.

Avila-Fragoza crossed third in the 1600 meters with a one-mile run of 4:54.81, Wells sophomore Isaac Gale followed in fourth for the final medal in 5:16.69 and Wells junior Cameron Livingstone crossed in 5:23.12 for sixth.

In the discus, the Leopards earned a third-place throw of 111-feet-1-inch from junior Carson Ballard.

Gale ran fourth in the 3200 meters with a two-mile jaunt of 11:35.74, and Livingston crossed fifth in 11:40.53.

Wells junior Maximillion Dahl cleared the bar at a height of 9-feet for sixth place in the pole vault.

In the high jump, Wells sophomore Marcos Cobian successfully cleared 5-feet-4-inches for seventh.

Relays

As was the case with the girls, the Wells boys earned considerable points — and a state title — in the relays.

The Leopards — Gale, Livingstone, senior Gonzalo Roque and Noorda — won the 4x800 with a time of 8:52.13.

Jackpot — senior Alfredo Aguilar, junior Angel Martinez, senior Julian Cervantes and Avila-Fragoza — crossed in 9:41.74 for fourth place.

In the 4x400, Wells — Hansen, junior Cade Cromley, Roque and Noorda — finished third with a time of 3:51.97.

The Jaguars — Aguilar, freshman Kevin Jack, junior Santiago Rosas and Avila Fragoza — were fifth and a spot outside of a medal with a time of 4:03.77.

Carlin — consisting of freshman Wyatt Kamensky, freshman Tommy Loftin, junior Winston Ludwig and sophomore Atticus Greer — crossed in 4:22.36 for seventh place.

The Leopards — junior Joe Dahl, Cromley, Maximillion Dahl and Hansen — earned the fourth and final medal with a time of 1:44.23 in the 4x200.

The Jags — senior Giovanny Rios, Martinez, Rosas and freshman Mateo Rosas — posted a time of 1:51.12 and capped the eight-team field.

In the 4x100, Wells — Joe Dahl, Cromley, Maximillion Dahl and Hansen — ran sixth with a time of 50.64 seconds.
