WELLS — In the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, the Carlin softball team beat Wells for the second time of the season.

After a 6-4 victory on March 2 during a preseason tournament in Laughlin, the Lady Railroaders took down the Lady Leopards 17-5 in six innings — winning by the run rule — in Wells.

In the top of the first inning, freshman Mariah Ramirez led off with a single, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error in center field on groundball by sophomore Kayona Christensen.

Christensen gave Carlin a 2-0 advantage as she crossed on a base knock up the middle by senior Danyel Micheli.

With one out, the Lady Roaders took a 3-0 lead on a single to short by junior Caileigh Shilts — who drove in sophomore courtesy runner Elizabeth Clancy.

Wells cut the deficit to one in the home half.

Freshman Aryanna Rodriguez led off with a base knock, stole second and third on crossed on a one-out double to right field by sophomore Adriana Aguilar — who swiped third and also stole home.

Carlin followed its three-run first with three runs in the top of the second, all coming with one out.

Ramirez scored on a bases-loaded walk to Shilts, Christensen crossed on a fielder’s choice that did not result in an out on a groundball to short by junior Adian Adams and junior Theralyn Flores strolled home on a free pass with the bases juiced to sophomore Joey Drown.

The Lady Railroaders seized full control in the top of the third, pushing across three more runs for a 9-2 lead.

Flores drove in Christensen with a bunt single, and Shilts brought in Clancy and Flores with a two-run double to left field.

In the bottom of the third, Wells freshman Khloe DelRio led off with an inside-the-park homer on a ball that never left the infield.

After three-consecutive frames with three runs, Carlin put four on the board in the top of the fourth.

Freshman Abigail Caple scored on a groundout RBI by Ramirez, and freshman Jazzmyn Salazar rolled home on an error at first base on a grounder from Christensen — who was driven in with a double to center field by Micheli.

Clancy — in a courtesy role — was brought in with a groundout RBI to short by Shilts for a 10-run lead.

Carlin’s advantage reached 11 in the top of the fifth, Caple crossing on a single up the middle by Ramirez.

The Lady Leopards brought the margin back to single digits and extended the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.

DelRio reached on a one-out error at first base and scored on a double to center field by Aguilar, who was driven in with a single to second base by sophomore Grace Otto.

In the top of the sixth, the Lady Railroaders capped the scoring — pushing in three runs.

Shilts was brought in with a groundout RBI to third base by Caple, and Christensen drove in Drown and Salazar with a two-out base knock to second.

After Mercado was hit by a pitch to lead off the home half, Carlin closed out the game early with three-consecutive outs — Flores throwing out the lead runner from center with a throw to second to Caple, who notched two straight 4-3 putouts.

The Lady Railroaders opened the doubleheader with a commanding 17-5 victory over Wells in six innings.

According to Carlin’s stats, Christensen hit 4-for-5 with a double, drove in four runs and scored four of her own — tying or leading Carlin in RBI and runs scored.

Shilts batted 3-for-4 with a double, four RBI and crossed once.

Ramirez finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a pair of runs, Caple going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Micheli closed 2-for-with a double, an RBI and a run.

Adams hit 2-for-4 with an RBI double, and Salazar batted 2-for-4 and crossed twice.

Flores finished 1-for-3 and scored two times.

Without knocks, Clancy scored two runs — Drown posting a run and an RBI.

For Wells, Aguilar tallied two doubles — hitting 2-for-3 — scored two runs and drove in one.

Senior Matti Kooi went 1-for-1, and Otto batted 1-for-2 with an RBI.

DelRio was 1-for-3 with an inside-the-park homer and scored twice, and Rodriguez went 1-for-3 and crossed once.

In the circle, Micheli earned the complete-game win — allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk over six innings.

Rodriguez took the loss and gave up 13 runs — seven earned — on six hits with four Ks and four free passes across 3-1/3 innings.

In relief, Otto allowed four unearned runs on two hits with three punchouts and two free passes through 2-2/3.
